XBox
March 20th, 2008 Greg CorwinYep, I did it. Last holiday I bought an Xbox 360.
Samantha bugged the crap out of me to get one years ago (when they had the Star Wars Pod-Racing game). I thought about it for a little while, I even went to the Good Guys to see what the whole deal is about. Holy guacamole – it cost about $800 and it came with some BS game like tennis. Think about the membership in a club you could get for that price! And get your kester off the couch to boot!
Nope, can’t do it.
Fast foward >> Xmas 2008.
There was this game that was hyped beyond belief and it did look neat – Halo 3. My good friend and Flash Evangelical Ian Chia turned me on to the Halo 3 promo website that was done in ActionScript 3 (ironically was released within days of Microsoft releasing Silverlight). I was totally WOW-ed by it. So I thought, “well maybe I should look into this XBox thing again”. The games were still pretty expensive, but there are a ton of games now – everything from role playing to “shoot-em-all and lot god sort them out”. Halo definitely fit the latter category and though I never really liked the FPS genre, the promo site tipped me over to saying “sure, why not”.
So I bought it, the XBox 360, Halo 3, extra consoles, and some other games for the kids.
Well, I have had the Xbox for about three months and I have to say I am semi-addicted. It really is fun.
Now, the reason that i am writing this post is this: some games are great, some games are really hard. Others are, well to say that they are a total waste of money would be kind, so I thought that I would start my own little Xbox Fonzi List.
I have some initial thoughts that will eventually turn into a full-blown list with reviews (complete with Fonzi’s and Un-Fonzi’s) later. I may even include some thoughts about some other games that I have played on the computer for reference too.
This is by no means a scab list for the industry, I am not going to pretend to be a 15yo Korean Kid that can “wax-off” aliens or frag friendlies to with ease. To paraphrase Popeye with proper diction – “I am who I am”, a 40-something who is totally behind the FPS gaming curve and who occasionally needs to consult a hint guide or other resource (like a trig or physics book). But I do see major differences in some of the games I have played and I might have a few good things to offer.
